Accessibility statement for UK Self Assessment Tax Calculator
This accessibility statement explains how accessible this service is. It also says what to do if you have difficulty using it, and how to report accessibility problems.
This page only contains information about the UK Self Assessment Tax Calculator service.
Using this service
This service is run by UK Self Assessment Tax Calculator. We want as many people as possible to be able to use it. This means you should be able to:
- change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- get from the start of the service to the end using just a keyboard
- get from the start of the service to the end using speech recognition software
- listen to the service using a screen reader
- use the service without JavaScript
We have also made the text in the service as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this service is
We know some things may not yet work as well as they should:
- the service has been checked against the accessibility standard by its development team, including with the NVDA screen reader, but not yet by an independent accessibility specialist or by people who use assistive technology every day
- the API reference for developers (/docs) needs JavaScript, but the same reference is available as an OpenAPI file at /openapi.json
- the service is not yet available in Welsh
What to do if you have difficulty using this service
If you have difficulty using this service, tell us about it.
Reporting accessibility problems with this service
We are always looking to improve the accessibility of this service. If you find any problems that are not listed on this page or think we are not meeting accessibility requirements, report the accessibility problem.
Technical information about this service’s accessibility
We are committed to making this service accessible, and we test it against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard.
Compliance status
This service is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below, and because it has not yet had an independent accessibility audit.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Automated testing found one result on questions where choosing an answer shows more questions. The GOV.UK Frontend component for these questions adds an aria-expanded attribute to the answer. Some testing tools report this as not allowed. It comes from the standard GOV.UK component, and we will follow GOV.UK Design System guidance on it.
We have not found any other issues.
Disproportionate burden
We are not claiming that any accessibility problems would be a disproportionate burden to fix.
How we tested this service
The service was last tested on 12 October 2026 by the development team, against the WCAG 2.2 AA standard. We tested every type of page in the service. This included the start page, each kind of question, error messages, check your answers and results. We also tested the take-home pay calculator, the tax tools, information pages and admin pages.
We tested the pages for working out a Budget Payment Plan amount and for customer accounts in the same way.
We used automated testing with axe-core version 4.13.0. It checks the WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 rules at levels A and AA, and best practice. We also checked that the service works without JavaScript, and that errors are shown the way the GOV.UK Design System sets out.
We then tested complete journeys through the questions with a tool that checks WCAG 2.2 AA and the GOV.UK Design System. This included every journey in the service and each of the tax tools. It also checked pages at 320 pixels wide, with increased text spacing, without JavaScript and in high contrast mode. It found no failures on the service’s own pages.
We also used the NVDA screen reader with the Chrome browser on 112 pages. These included start pages, questions, error messages, check your answers and results. We recorded what it said, and checked it.
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
Before the service is made public, we will:
- have it audited by an independent accessibility specialist
- test it with people who use assistive technology, including the JAWS, VoiceOver and TalkBack screen readers and speech recognition software
- replace or fix the API reference’s remaining problems
- make it available in Welsh
